Vastu for Home: The Complete Beginner's Guide (Plus the Best Main Entrance Direction)

Vastu Shastra is the ancient Indian science of architecture and space - a 5,000-year-old system for arranging a building so that natural energies, sunlight and air flow work for the people inside rather than against them. You don't need to rebuild your house to benefit from it. This complete beginner's guide explains how Vastu works, which direction your main entrance should face, where every room ideally belongs, and 20 essential tips you can start applying today.

What is Vastu Shastra, really?

At its core, Vastu maps any plot or building onto a grid of energy called the Vastu Purusha Mandala. Each of the eight directions is associated with an element, a planet and a deity, and each is best suited to certain activities. The five elements - earth, water, fire, air and space - each have a “home” direction, and the art of Vastu is placing the right function in the right zone so the elements stay in balance.

Stripped of mysticism, much of Vastu is remarkably practical: it puts the kitchen where the morning-to-noon sun aids cooking and hygiene, the prayer room where the gentle dawn light falls, and heavy bedrooms away from the bright, breezy corners. Done well, a Vastu-compliant home simply feels better lit, better ventilated and calmer - and that is much of the “magic.”

The main entrance: your home's most important Vastu point

The main door is where energy enters your home - Vastu calls it the “mouth” of the house. Get this right and you set the tone for everything inside. The best-facing directions, in order, are east, north, and north-east:

East-facing entrance

The east welcomes the rising sun, the source of energy, health and recognition. East-facing homes are excellent all-rounders, favoured for fresh starts and good reputation.

North-facing entrance

North is the direction of Kubera, the lord of wealth. A north-facing door is especially prized for prosperity and career growth, and pairs naturally with keeping the north zone of the home light and open.

North-east entrance

The north-east is the most sacred, auspicious corner of all - an entrance here is considered to invite divine grace, clarity and well-being.

What about south and west?

A south or west-facing entrance is not automatically bad, despite what you may have heard. The exact placement of the door within the wall matters more than the broad facing. Each wall is divided into segments (padas), and certain segments even of the south are auspicious. The real defects come from wrong internal layout, a dark or blocked entrance, or a door facing a sharp corner, pole or rubbish - not the compass facing alone. If you have a south-facing home, the fix is precision, not panic.

10 rules for an auspicious main entrance

Regardless of facing, follow these: keep the entrance well-lit and freshly painted; make the main door the largest door in the home and let it open clockwise, inward; ensure it does not creak; avoid a shoe rack, dustbin or clutter right at the threshold; place a clean nameplate; add a threshold (dehleez) or a small marble step; hang a toran or auspicious symbol; ensure the door does not face a staircase going down, a toilet, or a sharp corner; keep the area green with a healthy plant (not thorny); and make sure the path to the door is unobstructed.

The Brahmasthan: keep the heart of your home open

The very centre of your home is the Brahmasthan - its energetic heart, ruled by space (Akash). Vastu insists this zone stay open, clean and light: no toilet, no heavy beam or pillar, no staircase, and ideally no heavy furniture. When the centre breathes, energy flows freely to every surrounding room. A skylight or open courtyard here is considered hugely auspicious.

20 essential Vastu tips for any home

Pulling it together, here are quick wins you can apply room to room: (1) face east or north while working; (2) sleep with your head to the south; (3) cook facing east; (4) keep the north-east light and clutter-free; (5) fix all leaking taps - water is wealth; (6) keep the Brahmasthan open; (7) place the pooja room in the north-east; (8) keep broken items and dead plants out; (9) ensure mirrors don't face the bed or the main door; (10) let in morning sunlight; (11) place heavy furniture in the south and west; (12) keep medicines and clutter off the bedroom floor; (13) use warm earthy colours in bedrooms; (14) keep the kitchen and toilet apart; (15) hang uplifting art, not images of war, sorrow or sinking ships; (16) keep clocks working; (17) avoid a toilet in the north-east; (18) add a healthy plant near the entrance; (19) keep the south-west heavy and stable; and (20) declutter regularly - stagnant stuff means stagnant energy.

How to find the directions in your home

You only need a compass (your phone has one). Stand at the centre of your home and note which way is true north, then map the eight zones outward. Mark where your entrance, kitchen, bedrooms and bathrooms fall. Once you can see your home as a grid, every tip in this guide becomes actionable - and you'll quickly spot which corrections will give you the biggest lift.

Frequently asked questions

Which direction should the main entrance of a house face?

East or north is most auspicious, with north-east also excellent. These directions invite the morning sun and wealth energy. A well-lit, clutter-free door matters as much as the facing.

Is a south-facing house bad as per Vastu?

No. A south-facing house is not automatically bad. With the right door placement within the wall and a proper internal layout, it can be perfectly prosperous. Defects come from wrong internal placement, not the facing.

Where should the pooja room be?

In the north-east (Ishanya), the most sacred and light-filled zone. Face east or north while praying.

What is the Brahmasthan?

The central zone of the home, its energetic heart. Keep it open, clean and free of toilets, staircases and heavy furniture so energy circulates freely.

Can I apply Vastu without breaking walls?

Absolutely. Most corrections - seating and sleeping direction, decluttering, lighting, plant and mirror placement, fixing leaks - need no construction at all.
