Which Direction Should You Sleep? The Complete Bedroom Vastu Guide

If you wake up tired no matter how many hours you spend in bed, the problem may not be your mattress - it may be the direction your head is pointing. Vastu Shastra has detailed rules for sleeping direction, bed placement and bedroom location, all designed around one idea: that the body, while asleep, is at its most receptive to the energies around it. Here is everything you need to know, from the single most important rule to the small fixes that transform a restless room into a restful one.

The single most important rule: which way should your head point?

Vastu ranks the four head-directions clearly. The reasoning blends tradition with the idea that the human body carries a subtle magnetic charge that should not fight the earth's own magnetic field.

Why south is best

Sleeping with your head to the south is the gold standard in Vastu. The earth's magnetic field runs from north (south pole of the magnet) to south, and the human head is believed to carry a positive charge. Pointing the head south means like poles do not repel - the body relaxes, blood circulation settles, and sleep deepens. South-head sleep is traditionally associated with sound health and a long life.

Why you should never sleep with your head to the north

This is the rule Vastu is most emphatic about. With the head to the north, the body's positive charge faces the earth's north pole - like poles repelling. Vastu links this to restlessness, headaches, raised blood pressure and disturbed sleep over time. There is also a strong cultural dimension: in Hindu tradition, the body of the deceased is laid with the head to the north, so the north-head position is avoided for the living.

East - the scholar's direction

Pointing the head east aligns you with the rising sun and is considered excellent for concentration, learning and memory. It is the recommended direction for children and students, whose study and sleep both benefit from east-facing energy.

Where should the master bedroom be?

Direction of sleep is half the picture; the location of the room within the home is the other half. Vastu places the master bedroom in the south-west (Nairutya). This is the zone of earth energy - heavy, stable and grounding - which supports the head of the family, strengthens authority, and is believed to give relationships staying power. A heavier room in the south-west also balances the home's energy as a whole.

Other bedrooms: children do well in the west or north-west; guests suit the north-west; and the north-east should never be a bedroom, as this sacred, light zone is meant for prayer and open energy, not the heaviness of sleep.

Bed placement: 8 rules for a restful room

1. Place the bed against the south or west wall

The headboard should rest against a solid south or west wall. This naturally lets you sleep with your head to the south or west and gives a sense of protection and support behind you.

2. Never put the bed directly under a beam

An exposed beam, sloping ceiling or heavy chandelier directly over the bed creates “pressure” energy that Vastu links to anxiety and disturbed sleep. Shift the bed or box in the beam with a false ceiling.

3. Don't align the bed with the door

Your feet should not point directly at the bedroom door while you sleep - again, the “death position.” Position the bed so it is visible from the door but not in a straight line with it.

4. Keep a small gap between bed and wall

Leave a little space on both sides of a couple's bed rather than pushing it into a corner. Equal access on both sides is believed to support an equal, balanced relationship.

5. No mirror facing the bed

A mirror that reflects the sleeping couple is one of the most cited bedroom defects, associated with disturbed sleep, anxiety and friction between partners. Relocate it, or cover it at night.

6. Keep electronics and TVs out - or covered

Televisions and screens act like mirrors and emit restless energy. If you must keep a TV in the bedroom, place it in a cabinet or cover it before sleep.

7. No water features or fish tanks in the bedroom

Water energy belongs in living areas, not the bedroom. Water elements here are thought to create emotional instability and unrest.

8. Avoid storing clutter or shoes under the bed

A clear space under the bed lets energy circulate. Metal storage, shoes, and clutter beneath you are linked to subconscious stress. If you must store, keep it to soft items like bed linen.

Colours and light for a Vastu bedroom

Soft, earthy and warm tones suit the south-west master bedroom best - think gentle browns, beiges, terracotta, muted pinks and light greens. These ground the room and promote calm. Avoid harsh black, bright red, or dark blue on large surfaces, which can over-stimulate. Let in natural morning light through east or north windows, and use warm, dimmable lighting at night rather than harsh white tubes.

Special case: couples, love and marriage

For couples, the south-west master bedroom strengthens the bond, but small touches help: keep paired objects (two bedside lamps, a pair of birds or mandarin ducks in the south-west), use rose or peach tones, and remove any single-person imagery or sad artwork. Family photos belong elsewhere; the couple's bedroom should celebrate the two of you. Our Love & Marriage ebook covers relationship-specific placements in detail.

Quick fixes if you can't change the room

Renting, or stuck with a fixed layout? You still have options. The most powerful single change is simply rotating your sleeping position so your head points south or east - this needs no construction at all. Beyond that: cover or remove bed-facing mirrors, clear the space under the bed, switch to warm lighting, and add calming earth-tone bedding. These small moves address the majority of bedroom Vastu defects.
